Detailed Information

If you're considering Buttock Implants...

Buttock Implants are used in a gluteal augmentation which will increase and/or reshape the appearance of your buttocks. The buttock implants are soft and composed of silicone in solid form, unlike soft gel silicone found in some breast implants. The buttock implants can be cut and reshaped as needed for your particular body form.

If you're considering gluteal augmentation, this web page will give you a basic understanding of the procedure-when it can help, how it's performed, and what results you can expect. It can't answer all of your questions about buttock implants, since a lot depends on the individual patient. Please ask Dr. Mitts about anything you do not understand.

THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR BUTTOCK IMPLANTS

The best candidates for buttock implants are men and women who are in good health but are bothered by the appearance of their buttocks. Buttock implants are ideal for those who want to enlarge, lift or even reshape their buttocks. Some people may want buttock implants to boost their self-esteem while others may want the appearance of popular celebrities. Either way, buttock implants are an excellent way to enhance your overall body shape and appearance.

ALL SURGERY CARRIES SOME UNCERTAINTY AND RISK

Hundreds of buttock implant procedures are performed successfully each year. When done by a qualified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Mitts, who is trained in body contouring, the results are generally quite positive. Nevertheless, there are always risks associated with surgery and specific complications associated with the buttock implant procedure.

Although extremely rare, it is possible to bleed post-operatively resulting in another surgery to control and drain the collected blood. You could develop a post-operative infection and need to have the buttock implants removed, the infection dealt with and still have to wait for several months before an additional surgery can be performed to re-insert the butt implants.

Loss of sensitivity is common, although temporary after the buttock implant procedure. Permanent sensation loss in general, can and may happen, although this is rare. There is also the possibility of developing a Seroma which is a mass caused by the accumulation of serum fluid within a tissue or organ. Or a Hematoma which is a localized mass of blood that is typically confined within an organ, tissue, space, or potential space and may be a result from a broken blood vessel. There is the possibility of shifting of the implant, leading to additional surgeries. There is also the possibility of a negative reaction to the anesthetic.

The most important risk to consider is the risk of infection. Simply stated, buttock implants are placed in an area of the body where there is a much higher chance of bacterial infection. It goes without saying, that no matter who you are, the proximity of any surgical procedure to the rectal area, is one where severe infection can occur. Rest assured, when choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Mitts to perform gluteal augmentation, the chances of infection are extremely rare.

PLANNING YOUR SURGERY

During your initial consultation, Dr. Mitts will evaluate your health and assess your body contours. Be sure to tell Dr. Mitts if you smoke, and if you're taking any medications, vitamins, or other drugs.

Be frank in discussing your expectations with Dr. Mitts. He will be equally frank with you, describing alternatives to gluteal augmentation and the risks and limitations of each. In any case, Dr. Mitts will work with you to recommend the procedure that is right for you and will come closest to producing the desired body contour.

During the consultation, Dr. Mitts will also explain the anesthesia he will use, the type of facility where the buttock implant surgery will be performed, and the costs involved. In most cases, health insurance policies do not cover the cost of buttock implants, but you should check your policy to be sure.

PREPARING FOR YOUR SURGERY

Dr. Mitts will give you specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on eating and drinking, smoking, and taking or avoiding certain vitamins, and medications.

You will be given pre-operative information that explains everything you should do and know before your surgery date. The information will include all the medications you should not take for up to 2 weeks before your surgery. These medications will include, but are not limited to, aspirin containing products. It is also quite possible that you will have preliminary blood work performed.

Your butt implants will more than likely be done with either General or Light Sleep Sedation and probably discharged about 1-2 hours after surgery. Some additional preparations to remember:

  • Arrive on time
You should have the arrival time in your information packet or at least confirm the night before and make the proper notation. If you are late, we may have to cancel your surgery.
  • Discontinue alcohol and smoking
Do not consume alcohol and do not smoke several weeks prior to your surgery. If your lungs are congested or have wheezing, the surgery cannot be performed due to the risk of pneumonia.
  • Do not take aspirin
Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, large doses of Vitamin E, or algae-containing food supplements for at least 2 weeks prior to surgery. They may act as a blood thinner and promote excessive bruising. You may use Tylenol or similar medications.
  • Do not eat or drink prior to surgery
Do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the evening prior to your surgery.
  • If you bruise easily
If you bruise easily, notify our office immediately and certain medications will be prescribed for you prior to surgery to help prevent bruising.
  • Take Vitamin C
Take Vitamin C capsules or tablets for approximately 3-4 weeks prior to surgery. This is necessary to promote good healing. You may continue this vitamin after surgery.

Prior to the gluteal augmentation surgery, should you develop any fever, chills or other signs of a cold or other infection, please call us immediately. Wear loose fitting clothing to the surgery center or hospital.

LOCATION OF YOUR SURGERY

Dr. Mitts may perform your buttock implant procedure in an outpatient surgical center, an office-based facility, or at a hospital, where you may stay for several days.

TYPES OF ANESTHESIA

Dr. Mitts will most likely select general anesthesia, so you'll sleep through the entire operation.

THE SURGERY

While you are asleep (general anesthesia) a two to three inch incision is made between the buttocks in the "crack", also known as the midline. Through this incision the buttock muscle (gluteus maximus) is lifted up and a pocket is made just large enough for the implant. The implant is inserted into this pocket. The opposite side is then completed. Both sides are carefully examined in order to assure that the results look natural and symmetric. Dissolvable stitches placed in the skin incision. A bandage is placed that provides compression to the buttocks which in turn helps reduce discomfort and swelling.

AFTER YOUR SURGERY

You will be able to leave within an hour or so after the two hour buttock enhancement procedure. You may be very uncomfortable the first several days. It will probably be difficult for you to turn in any position to get comfortable and it is important that someone be with you at least overnight and probably for the next several days just to help get out of bed, prepare meals, etc.

The taped dressing that is applied during surgery to provide compression and support is usually removed two to three days following butt implant surgery. At this time, you can take showers and begin to move around better. The results can be seen immediately, but the buttocks will look more natural and become softer as the muscle stretches several months after your surgery.

GETTING BACK TO NORMAL

Full activities including gym work, bicycling, and running can usually be resumed about four weeks following surgery. It may take up to six or eight months until the results feel as if they're part of the body and you forget about them even being there.

YOUR NEW LOOK
